Formal Nikki

Growing up in Wooster, Ohio, Nikki shared a love for art with her grandmother who was also a painter. Continuing her interest in art, Nikki studied at Ohio University where she gravitated towards graphic arts. Nikki then moved to Tennessee where she successfully worked the corporate life of graphic designer and later freelance web designer. She has since “rediscovered” her passion for making art on a canvas instead of on a computer.

Nikki has come closer to her roots by jumping with full force into her painting, and she feels she is finally doing what life has called her to do. She has an innate love for color, texture and composition, and as a result the paintings come naturally.

Nikki and her husband live in a Nashville suburb with their two children and their dog.

Artist Statement:

I am Nikki Shannon and painting is the one thing that I know with absolute certainty that I am supposed to be doing. Although my style is continually evolving, the constant characteristics of my work are bold colors, intriguing textures and striking images. I truly enjoy getting my hands dirty and experimenting with the process.

If you were to see me in an art museum, I’m the one the guards are telling to step back from the paintings because I stand six inches away from the art.

While I’m impressed with the overall image, I’m typically more interested in seeing what went into creating the painting. I love to see texture and brush strokes. How did the artist push the paint to create their image? Did they use thick paint, or thin? Are the colors smooth, subtle and blended or unmixed, bold and texturized?

I want people to see my artwork in the same way. No matter if it is a detailed flower or a simple wine bottle, my paintings are complex and dynamic. I use vibrant paints, layers of textures and a combination of palette knives and brushes to create works that are intriguing, whether you are looking at them from across the room or from six inches away.

Hi there! I’m Nikki Shannon

I paint contemporary works of art featuring vibrant colors and visceral texture. This is the online archive of my body of work.
